Friends of Lackota Animal Sanctuary is based out of Northern Colorado and named after a horse rescued 30 years ago. The co-founder saw something in this horse that no one else did. Instead of allowing him to be sent to the local kill sale, he knew he had to save him. As a young child he had to get a job in order to help pay for his purchase fee. It took a lot of hard work an dedication but nearly 30 years later, Lackota left his imprint on so many lives. Rescuing and rehabilitating so many animals, both domestic and wild, the founders decided to make it official and formed the sanctuary.
Our goal here, is to provide that second chance and allow others to beat the odds. While focusing on horses and donkeys from the slaughter pipeline, there is no animal turned away, as long as we are able to provide the care that they require. Many of our animals come from kill buyers or meat auctions and require some love and tlc to regain the trust they had before they were basically thrown away. Whether we are able to find them a forever home or they stay here at the sanctuary, they no longer have to fear the future.
